Letterbox Love #28

Letterbox Love came about after some drama with the American book haul memes, so the UKYA bloggers came together on Twitter to organise one of our own. Summaries are taken from the cover, or Amazon/NetGalley/Goodreads in the case of e-books, unless otherwise stated. Hosted by Narratively Speaking.

I have to confess that with working last Saturday, running around to find an outfit for the work party that night and the party itself, I completely forgot about LL, so here’s the last two week’s worth of books.

For Review:

Anything to Have You, Paige Harbison (e-proof)

Nothing should come between best friends, not even boys. Especially not boys.

Natalie and Brooke have had each other’s backs forever. Natalie is the quiet one, college bound and happy to stay home and watch old movies. Brooke is the movie – the life of every party, the girl everyone wants to be.

Then it happens – one crazy night that Natalie can’t remember and Brooke’s boyfriend, Aiden, can’t forget. Suddenly there’s a question mark in Natalie and Brooke’s friendship that tests everything they thought they knew about each other and has both girls discovering what true friendship really means.

So excited for this one! Thanks Harlequin Teen and NetGalley!

Atlantis: Revelation, Marcus Blake (paperback)

For millennia, mankind has been searching for Atlantis – the ancient lost city that sank without a trace – and has found nothing more than myth.

A young man drifts, unconscious, into a quiet Haitian harbour. He wakes to find he can only remember one thing – his name, Achilles. Helped by Marta, a beautiful smuggler, he begins a desperate search for his identity.

But soon they are running for their lives, pursued by a covert government agency that will stop at nothing to track them down. The agency knows something Achilles doesn’t – that he is no ordinary young man.

And Achilles will find himself at the centre of a deadly game between two civilisations: the world above, and the world below.

This sounds really interesting. Thanks Puffin!

Taste of Darkness, Maria V Snyder (paperback)

The final battle begins...

Powerful healer Avry knows hardship and trouble. She fought a plague and survived. She took on corrupt King Tobon and defeated him. But now her true love, Kerrick, is missing and Avry he’s gone forever.

Yet she faces a more immediate – and deadly – threat. The Skeleton King plots to claim the Fifteen Realms for his own.

With the territories’ armies in disarray and the dead not staying dead, Avry’s powers are needed now more than ever.

Torn between love and loyalty, she must choose her path carefully. For the future of Avry’s world depends on her decision...

I really love Maria V Snyder and I’ve been saving this trilogy until I can power through them all – now I can! Thanks Mira!

Bought:

The Fiery Heart, Richelle Mead (hardback)

In The Indigo Spell Sydney was torn between the Alchemist way of life and what her heart and gut were telling her to do. And in one breathtaking moment that Richelle Mead fans will never forget, she made a decision that shocked even her...

But the struggle isn’t over for Sydney. As she navigates the aftermath of her life-changing decision, she still finds herself pulled in too many directions at once. Her sister Zoe has arrived, and while Sydney longs to grow close to her, there’s still so much she must keep secret. Working with Marcus has changed the way she views the Alchemists, and Sydney must tread a careful path as she harnesses her profound magical ability to undermine the way of life she was raised to defend. Consumed by passion and vengeance, Sydney struggles to keep her secret life under wraps as the treat of exposure – and re-education – looms larger than ever.

Pulses will race throughout this smouldering fourth instalment of the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where no secret is safe.

I couldn’t find this anywhere so had to order it from the US. It came quicker than I expected and is in perfect condition – winner! Already read and reviewed it and I loved it.

The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath (paperback)

A girl lives in an out-of-the-way town for nineteen years, so poor she can’t afford a magazine and then gets a scholarship to college and wins a prize here and there and ends up steering New York like her own private car. Only I wasn’t steering anything. Not even myself.

Working in New York one hot summer, Esther Greenwood is on the brink of her future. Yet she is also on the edge of a darkness that makes her world increasingly unreal. In this vivid and unforgettable novel, Esther’s vision of the world shimmers and shifts: day-to-day New York living, her crazed men-friends, and hot dinner dances...

I read and adored this when I was around 14/15 and have recently fancied a re-read. It was fate when I saw it cheap on Amazon.

Whoops, I went to Foyles again. And there was 20% off everything...

Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony, Eoin Colfer (paperback)

Has criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl met his match?

Until recently Artemis Fowl was the only human to have discovered that fairies do exist. But now a second juvenile genius wants to capture one for scientific study – and not just any old fairy. The newcomer wants to trap a demon, the most human-hating species known to man.

Only an ancient time spell separates the demons from mankind – and Artemis must prevent it from unravelling. If he fails, the bloodthirsty tribe will re-launch their quest to wipe humans from the planet...

There can only be one winner in this battle of the demons. And it may not be Artemis Fowl.

This series is just so much fun.

The Truth About You & Me, Amanda Grace (paperback)

smart girls aren’t supposed to do stupid things.

On her first day at Green River Community College, Madelyn Hawkins meets Bennett Cartwright, her biology professor. He’s funny. He’s interesting. And he has no idea that Madelyn is only sixteen.

When they’re together, Madelyn feels more alive than she’s ever felt before. And she knows Bennett feels the same way. She also knows that if she tells him her real age, their relationship will be over.

So Madelyn makes a simple decision.

She won’t tell him.

This might sound odd, but I love teacher/student romances, and I think I’m going to love the style of this one. Excited!

Night of Cake and Puppets, Laini Taylor (e-book)

Petite though she may be, Zuzana is not known for timidity. Her best friend, Karou, calls her ‘rabid fairy’, her ‘voodoo eyes’ are said to freeze blood, and even her older brother fears her wrath. But when it comes to the simple matter of talking to Mik, or ‘violin boy’, her courage deserts her. Now, enough is enough. Zuzana is determined to meet him, and she has a fistful of magic and a plan. It’s a wonderfully elaborate treasure hunt that will take Mik all over Prague on a cold winter’s night before finally leading him to the treasure: herself!

Violin Boy’s not going to know what hit him.

I love these characters and this world so I’m seriously looking forward to this.

Sophie
