Letterbox Love #18

Letterbox Love came about after some drama with the American book haul memes, so the UKYA bloggers came together on Twitter to organise one of our own. Summaries are taken from the cover, or Amazon/NetGalley/Goodreads in the case of e-books, unless otherwise stated. Hosted by Narratively Speaking.

For Review:

The Iron Traitor – Julie Kagawa (e-proof)

In the real world, when you vanish into thin air for a week, people tend to notice.

After his unexpected journey into the lands of the fey, Ethan Chase just wants to get back to normal. Well, as “normal” as you can be when you see faeries every day of your life. Suddenly the former loner with the bad reputation has someone to try for – his girlfriend Kenzie. Never mind that he’s forbidden to see her again.

But when your name is Ethan Chase and your sister is one of the most powerful faeries in the Nevernever, “normal” simply isn’t to be. For Ethan’s nephew, Keirran, is missing, and may be on the verge of doing something unthinkable in the name of saving his own love. Something that will fracture the human and faery worlds forever, and give rise to the dangerous fey known as the Forgotten. As Ethan’s and Keirran’s fates entwine and Keirran slips further into darkness, Ethan’s next choice may decide them all.

I love Julie Kagawa! Thanks NetGalley/Harlequin Teen!

Heartbeat – Elizabeth Scott (e-proof)

Life. Death. And...love?

Emma would give anything to talk to her mother one last time. Tell her about slipping grades, her anger with her stepfather and the boy with the bad reputation who might be the only one Emma can be herself with.

But Emma can’t tell her mother anything. Because her mother is brain-dead and being kept alive by machines for the baby growing inside her.

Meeting bad-boy Caleb Harrison wouldn’t have interested old Emma. But New Emma-the one who exists in a fog of grief, who no longer cares about school, whose only social outlet is her best friend Olivia – New Emma is startled by the connection she and Caleb forge. Feeling her own heart beat again wakes Emma from the grief that has grayed her existence. Is there hope for life after death – and maybe, for love?

I have a hit-and-miss relationship with Elizabeth Scott and I hope this one’s a hit! Thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Teen!

This Song Will Save Your Life – Leila Sales (proof)

A cult read for fans of The Perks of Being a Wallflower and Eleanor and Park.

All her life, Elsie Dambowski has been an outsider. Starting a new school, the dreams of fitting in at last – but when her best attempts at popularity fail, she almost gives up. then she stumbles upon a secret warehouse party. There, at night, Elise can be a different person, making real friends, falling in love for the first time and finding her true passion – Djing.

An irresistible about hope, heartbreak and the power of music to bring people together.

Eek, thanks Macmillan! So, so excited for this.

World After – Susan Ee (proof)

The survivors of the angel apocalypse begin to scrape together what’s left of the modern world.

When a group of people capture Penryn’s sister Paige, thinking she’s a monster, the situation ends in a massacre. As Penryn searches the streets of San Francisco looking for her, she’s drawn into the heart of the angels’ secret plans, where she catches a glimpse of their motivations, and learns the horrifying extent to which they are willing to go.

Meanwhile, Raffe hunts for his wings. Without them, he can’t rejoin the angels, can’t take his rightful place as one of their leaders. When faced with recapturing his wings or helping Penryn survive, which will he choose?

I haven’t read Angelfall but I’ve heard amazing things about it. Thanks Hodder!

Bought:

The Longest Ride – Nicholas Sparks (hardcover)

Ninety-one-year-old Ira Levinson is in trouble. Struggling to stay conscious after a car crash, with his mind fading, an image of his adored – and long-dead – wife Ruth appears. Urging him to hang on, she lovingly recounts the joys and sorrows of their life together: how they met, the dark days of WWII and its unrelenting effect on their families.

A few miles away, college student Sophia Danko’s life is about to change. Recovering from a break-up, she meets the young, rugged Luke and is thrown into a world far removed from her privileged school life. Sophia sees a new and tantalising future for herself, but Luke is keeping a secret that could destroy it all.

Ira and Ruth. Sophia and Luke. Two couples, separated by years and experience, whose lives are about to converge in the unexpected – and shocking – of ways.

I haven’t enjoyed his latest novels as much, but this sounds like more of a hark back to his earlier novels. Fingers crossed!

The Bane Chronicles 6: Saving Raphael Santiago – Cassandra Clare; Sarah Rees Brennan (e-novella)

One of the more interesting jobs Magnus has ever been involved in... A distraught mother in 1950s New York hires Magnus to find her son, Raphael, but when Magnus finds him, young Raphael is already beyond saving. Or is he?

Yay, another one!
