I used to finish ever book I started, whether I was enjoying it or not. But life is short. I’ve realised that I don’t have time for books I’m not full involved in any longer so if I don’t like something or don’t connect with it as much as I want to, I’ll put it aside. It still makes me feel guilty though, especially if I received them for review so I still want to talk about them, explain why I didn’t like them. Here are the most recent books I DNF-ed.

Fall, Bethany
Griffin
I was so excited for this. A dark,
Gothic retelling of Edgar Allen Poe’s The
Fall of the House of Usher – it sounded perfect. But I just couldn’t get
into it. I didn’t find it as creepy as I expected, I didn’t connect with
Madeline and I had no desire to follow her story any further. I’m hoping that I
can go back to it another time as others have loved it so much.
Talon,
Julie Kagawa
I love
Julie Kagawa’s books so I was devastated when I gave up on this about 30 pages
in. I’ve never been a huge fan of dragons but I thought with Julie’s trademark
magic I would fall in love with her world and characters as I always do, but we
just didn’t click. I thought the mythology was strong and I didn’t dislike the
main characters, but it just wasn’t there for me. Maybe another one that I read
when I wasn’t in the mood for it...
It’s
the End of the World As We Know It,
Saci Lloyd
Now, my dislike for this one I know
wasn’t due to being in the wrong mood. It was promoted as perfect for fans of
Douglas Adams and I could tell that Saci Lloyd tried really hard to capture the
same charming eccentricities, but it didn’t work for me. It felt ridiculous and
over the top, but in a trying-too-hard way and it just felt so false. It missed
the mark by several miles for me.

I've been interested in reading Talon for a while; it keeps cropping up in the 'similar books' bar of Amazon. It's a shame you didn't enjoy it.
ReplyDeleteAh, what a shame. I've recently abandoned quite a few books as well. But I always feel like so many books don't work for me but they will for someone else and it's okay not to like every book. I recently started Talon and was enjoying it but then I put it down and never returned to it...
ReplyDeleteI made it through 'It's the End of the World...' but I wasn't hugely impressed. I think it was a mistake to promote it as perfect for Douglas Adams fans because it was always going to come up short.
