My Auto-Buy Authors

Every few weeks I seem to go on a pre-ordering spree, usually brand new books by my favourite authors, sometimes even before a title or summary has been announced. It just doesn’t matter if it’s that author. And that got me to thinking just how many auto-buy authors I have and want to share them! Here are my top ten:

If you know me even a little bit, this first name won’t be a surprise in the slightest: Sarah Dessen. As an author who doesn’t have a regular publishing schedule and an unpredictable gap between the US and UK publication, an announcement of a new Sarah Dessen novel that launches me straight pre-ordering. I devour every single books she writes; in fact, I’d read a shopping list if she wrote it.

Meg Rosoff is one of UKYA’s most talented and ingenious authors and you never know what you’re going to get from one of her novels. Each is so, so different and delivers something new, plot-wise and thematically. And I actually don’t enjoy all of her novels equally, I’ve even straight-up disliked one, but that makes no difference to me when it comes to pre-ordering apparently...

I think that Maggie Stiefvater lies similarly to Meg Rosoff in my books. I base all of my love for her on the first books I read by her: Shiver. That trilogy blew me away so thoroughly that I will read everything else she ever writes in search of feeling that way again. So even though I wasn’t a huge fan of Lament or even The Raven Boys, I was redeemed with Sinner and The Scorpio Races. And her writing is really always worth a read – it’s ridiculously beautiful.

Richelle Mead’s YA series’ are some of my very favourite of all time. Her mythology is always new and exciting, the emotions are always high and the characters that you can’t help but get overly invested in. I’ve never delved into her adult fiction, but I probably should actually...

My discovery of Paige Toon was a complete fluke when I spotted Lucy in the Sky, her debut, on offer in WH Smith’s years and years ago. I fell in love and never looked back. Her adult contemps are gorgeous, addictive and heart-warming reads that feature swoon-worthy romantic leads and at the beginning of the year, Paige delved into YA. The result was just as awesome and she’ll always reserve a permanent place on my bookshelf.

I’m a huge fan of Sarra Manning and that’s not a secret. My love for the first books I read by her, Diary of a Crush, has carried through me through loving her books for about eight years! I look forward to each and every one of Sarra Manning’s novels and I always eagerly anticipate meeting her next protagonist that I want to be friends with.

Trouble is Non Pratt’s debut novel and the only one out so far, but that was more than enough to put her on my auto-buy list. As well as being a completely awesome lady, Trouble is a gritty, realistic, heart-warming and bitingly funny – you can’t really ask for anything else really. I look forward to reading everything else Non publishes.

I love Keris Stainton and her books. She writes fun, sweet, romantic novels that always give me the warm fuzzies. She's one of those authors that I always eagerly anticipate news of a new release and don't hesitate to foist off copies of her books when I'm in bookshops.

I don’t think that Kody Keplinger gets nearly enough love in the UK as she should do. Her contemps are bitingly honest and open about sexuality and feminism, enough so that I think that aside from being set in American high schools, they’d fit in brilliantly with our edgy, contemp UKYA.

John Green is a standard answer, but it’s true. I feel almost guilty putting him on this list, but ever since I read Looking for Alaska back in the day I’ve been a steadfast fan. At least I can say that I loved him before TFiOS!

Who are your auto-buy authors? Do you have a pre-ordering problem like I do?
