I have done bad things. I can't take them back, and they are part of who I am.

Tris has survived a brutal attack on her former home and family. but she has paid a terrible price. Wracked by grief  and guilt, she becomes ever more reckless as she struggles to accept her new future.

Yet if Tris wants to uncover the truth about her world, she must be stronger than ever...because her more shocking choice and sacrifices lie ahead.

Divergent was one of my favourite books of last year and the tantalising ending left everyone salivating for Insurgent.

It had been nearly a year when since I read Veronica Roth’s debut when I began Inusrgent so I was a little rusty on the ins and outs as I hand’t had time for a re-read. I think this may have affected me in that I didn’t fall in love with Insurgent like I did Divergent. I couldn’t remember plot points that were brought back up and not explained again, even briefly,  and I struggled to remember who lots of the minor characters were and what their significance was. I also failed to recall which factions they were members of and I still failed to retain that quite important information. It was little things like this that tarnished my enjoyment of Insurgent a little which is a massive shame, really.

But there’s one thing about this series that I can’t really fault: Tris. She is an excellent heroine. At points in Insurgent, she annoyed me a little, but that was purely because she wasn’t doing what I wanted her to do! And if she had done what I wanted, she wouldn’t have been her so she’s forgiven! Veronica Roth really demonstrated how hard Tris has had it and it clearly showed that although brave and completely kickass, she’s human and, she too, has limits to what she can handle. Watching her come undone and put herself back together again makes for a very interesting sideline to the constant drama and action.

One of my favourites elements of Insurgent was Tris and Four’s (I refuse to call him Tobias) relationship. In Divergent, they were just getting together and starting out, but in Insurgent, they were there. Their relationship changed and developed so quickly and often that I’m surprised they didn’t give each other whiplash. I constantly wondered whether they’d be able to stay together with what was happening to them and the choices they, especially Tris, were making,

Although Insurgent didn’t quite match up to Divergent for me, I still loved it and I’m excited for the next book.

  1. I don't know whether to get Insurgent when it comes out. I checked out Divergent a little while back and really didn't think that much of it. I mean it was good... but nothing special.

We should talk about it properly some time.

  2. Jealous! I really want to read it! On a side note, I don't think I'm getting my copy of Black Dawn for another week. This makes me sad xXx

  4. I was also quite rusty, which is why I reread Divergent, but I know some people might not have time for rereads. Totally agree with you about Tris! She's come such a long way since the beginning of Divergent! Glad you enjoyed and hanks for the fantastic review :)

  5. I can't call him Tobias either....glad I'm not alone in this! I was slightly rusty at first, but I remembered everything by about a quarter of the way through. I think you become so absorbed in Tris that it's easy to forget everything else. V.R did post a Divergent recap on her blog, so it might be helpful for people to read that. I really liked their relationship as well, I liked that it wasn't all easy and straightforward, as given the situation they were in it definitely would've had some strain on it!

I don't think I liked it as much as Divergent, but still a 5* read from me

  6. I can't call him Tobias either...he's FOUR!!! I'm excited but sort of hesitant about reading Insurgent, because I REALLY want to love it as much as Divergent, but it doesn't seem to be as good as Divergent!

  7. Oh Soph, I wish you had re-read Divergent - I felt the same so I forced myself to re-read it and I'm glad I did as there was no recap. For the benefit of others, I actually recapped Divergent at the start of my Insurgent review. Such a shame that affected your enjoyment of the book but you could always re-read them back to back in the future. I definitely love Tris showing her human side and my favourite part was her relationship with Four (Tobias) <3
