Poetic Ponders (6)

Thanks, Sara!

During this year studying English Literature and Creative Writing, I’ve developed a new appreciation for poetry. With this in mind, I thought that I’d start a new weekly feature on So Many Books, So Little Time in which I share with you my favourite poems. They may be ones I discover on my course or ones I’ve loved for a long time.

Hopefully some of you will join me in sharing some awesome poems. I’ve got two short poems for you today instead of one longer one. Enjoy!

The Lilly – William Blake (1794)

The modest Rose puts forth a thorn:
The humble sheep, a threatening horn:
While the Lilly white, shall in love delight,
Nor a thorn or a threat stain her Beauty bright.

The Sick Rose – William Blake (1794)

O Rose, thou art sick!
The invisible worm
That flies in the night,
In the howling storm,
Has found out thy bed
Of crimson joy:
And his dark secret love
Does thy life destroy.

More Blake from A-level English Lit. I loved these ones so much that I memorised them so that I could use them in my exam. And I can still (sort of) recite them.

  1. I took poetry in college and I absolutely loved it. I didn't expect to love it a much, but it's one of my favorite classes ever.

  2. I love poetry. Especially old English authors.

    great post.

I woke up Sunday a.m. to find my blog, my 500 plus followers, my 100plus author interviews, and my 200 plus reviews gone. Blogger gave no explanation, but I think the account was hacked. Change your password often!

I have reloaded the interviews and reviews, plus redesigned the blog. But if you could, please hit the "follow" button so I can reclaim the fellow bloggers I miss. I'm still following you, as my account remained--thank goodness!

  3. The Lilly is really nice! I hadn't heard it before. When we staudied The Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience, the companion to tThe Sick Rose we were given was The Blossom. But I do like The Lilly! And The Sick Rose is one of my favourites, as you know! :)

  4. The Sick Rose is kind of... sick, in its analogy (correct term?).
    Love it.

I might participate in this next week.
